place a finger on the styloid process of the ulna, and then pronate in the ordinary way, it will be quite evident that the bony point moves from its place. It will return again when the hand is again supinated. 2. Lecomte's Ring Experiment.?If the radius alone moves, then, since the axis of movement at the wrist passes through the head of the ulna,1 the transverse diameter of the forearm there will be only about half of the diameter of the circle, part of whose circumference is traversed by the styloid process of the radius in pronation and supination. In other words, so long as the ulna is stationary, it will be impossible to rotate the wrist within a ring whose diameter is only slightly greater than that of the wrist itself. If, on the other hand, the ulna be moving in the reverse direction to that taken by the radius, the real axis of movement will be thrown more into the centre of the forearm, and the styloid process of the radius will traverse part of the circumference of a much smaller circle than it would otherwise do. The effect of rotational malunion of the radius and the ulna on supination and pronation.

We have assessed the influence of isolated and combined rotational malunion of the radius and ulna on the rotation of the forearm. Osteotomies were made in both the radius and the ulna at the mid-diaphyseal level of five cadaver forearms and stabilised with intramedullary metal implants. Malunion about the axis of the respective forearm bone was produced at intervals of 10 degrees. The ranges o...

Congenital Deficiency of Distal Ulna and Dislocation of the Radial Head Treated by Single Bone Forearm Procedure

Congenital deficiency of part of distal ulna affecting the distal radio-ulnar joint is a rare disorder. It is even rarer to find the association of proximal radio-ulnar joint dislocation along with distal ulnar deficiency. This type of congenital forearm anomaly is difficult to treat. Conversion to a single bone forearm in the expense of pronation-supination movement is a viable option. By doin...

Functional Outcome of Internal Fixation of Radial and Ulna Fracture

Background: Displaced fractures of radius and ulna bones in adults are usually treated with open reduction and internal fixation. The purpose of this research was to access functional outcome of these fractures. Materials and Methods: In this research 52 Patients who underwent ORIF with DCP 3.5 in past 5 years were investigated. Post-operation protocol was one week immobilization and then acti...

Correlation between dorsovolar translation and rotation of the radius on the distal radioulnar joint during supination and pronation of forearm.

This study aimed to describe the patterns of movements about radius and ulna in individual degrees of forearm rotation. And, we also determined the effect of forearm rotation on translation and rotation of the radius with reference to the ulna, and to measure the relationship between forearm rotation, translation and rotation of the radius. Computed tomography of multiple, individual forearm po...

Posttraumatic rotation deficit of the forearm, including synostosis

Prono-supination takes place over the full length of the forearm, the whole forearm thus being one single joint. Any change to the configuration of the proximal (PRUJ) or distal (DRUJ) radioulnar joints or to the forearm diaphyses and the connecting interosseous membrane (IOM) can result in loss of forearm rotation by either mechanical interference and/or by pain induction. Capsule retraction a...
